The hearing-impaired person with hearing aids and his or her counterpart both play important roles in reducing comprehension issues that can arise in a discussion. Adapted communication strategies can help both people.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p3\"><b>Communication strategies\u00a0for people with hearing loss<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p4\">Tell your conversation partner that you are hard of hearing;<\/li>\n<li class=\"p4\">Ask the person to rephrase what they said;<\/li>\n<li class=\"p4\">Indicate which part you did not understand;<\/li>\n<li class=\"p4\">Ask the person to repeat what they said;<\/li>\n<li class=\"p4\">Do not pretend to understand;<\/li>\n<li class=\"p4\">Stay calm and relaxed during the conversation;<\/li>\n<li class=\"p4\">Move to a different place or get closer to the other person to help the sound reach your ears or to be able to read lips more easily;<\/li>\n<li class=\"p4\">Decrease ambient noise at its source if possible;<\/li>\n<li class=\"p4\">Suggest specific strategies to your counterpart (\u201cCould you please speak slower, louder, spell out the word, etc.\u201d);<\/li>\n<li class=\"p4\">Ask conversation partners to always speak facing you and close to you;<\/li>\n<li class=\"p4\">Explain to your conversation partners how important it is for only one person to speak at a time;<\/li>\n<li class=\"p4\">Before a group meeting, pick out one person you would like to speak with and sit next to him or her;<\/li>\n<li class=\"p4\">Use a notepad so your conversation partner can write out the words you have trouble understanding.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 class=\"p2\"><strong>Strategic positioning<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p3\">Sit in a well-lit location near the speaker;<a href=\"http:\/\/legroupeforget.stage.okam.io\/blog-en\/files\/2017\/04\/iStock_40712126_LARGE.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-448 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/legroupeforget.stage.okam.io\/blog-en\/files\/2017\/04\/iStock_40712126_LARGE.jpg\" alt=\"Round table\" width=\"225\" height=\"212\" \/><\/a><\/li>\n<li class=\"p3\">Don\u2019t try to communicate if you can\u2019t see your counterpart;<\/li>\n<li class=\"p3\">Sit at a round table, if possible, to facilitate lip reading;<\/li>\n<li class=\"p3\">Eliminate noise sources by standing or sitting near a wall (See image.);<\/li>\n<li class=\"p3\">Position yourself where you can see the faces of your conversation partners clearly, to be able to read lips and facial expressions;<\/li>\n<li class=\"p3\">Keep windows behind you to prevent backlighting.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 class=\"p4\"><strong>Optimized lip reading<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p5\">Use visual clues like facial expressions and body language to compensate for the sounds or words you did not hear;<\/li>\n<li class=\"p5\">Make it a habit to look directly at the face of the person speaking, even if you seem to be understanding well;<\/li>\n<li class=\"p5\">Identify the subject of the conversation and avoid interrupting your conversation partner;<\/li>\n<li class=\"p6\">Concentrate on the meaning of the sentences (use the context to understand).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p2\">Lip reading is not a replacement for hearing, but it can help you understand better. It\u2019s not easy, though. Learning to lip read is like learning a new language: it takes time and practice.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p3\"><b>Tips\u00a0for friends and family <\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p4\">Get the person\u2019s attention gently before beginning to speak;<\/li>\n<li class=\"p4\">Choose a well-lit, calm place for your conversation;<\/li>\n<li class=\"p4\">Avoid places with ambient noise;<\/li>\n<li class=\"p4\">Stand or sit facing the person;<\/li>\n<li class=\"p4\">Speak slowly and clearly, but do not yell or exaggerate your pronunciation;<\/li>\n<li class=\"p4\">Do not hide your lips, or lower or turn your head;<\/li>\n<li class=\"p4\">Tell the person the subject of the conversation and let them know when it changes;<\/li>\n<li class=\"p4\">Use simple, short sentences. Rephrase sentences that were not understood;<\/li>\n<li class=\"p4\">Use different words to restate a message that wasn\u2019t understood;<\/li>\n<li class=\"p4\">Use relevant gestures;<\/li>\n<li class=\"p4\">Write down key words if necessary;<\/li>\n<li class=\"p4\">Do not speak to the person if you are not in the same room.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p2\"><a href=\"http:\/\/legroupeforget.stage.okam.io\/en\/make-an-appointment\/\">Meeting with your audioprosthetist <\/a>will help you learn the best communication strategies for your particular needs.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Wearing hearing aids helps people rediscover the pleasure of hearing.
